Great Cairo Subway

Great Cairo Metro is considered one of the most important national projects during the twenty and twenty-first centuries. The first metro line (Marg / Helwan line) was operated in 1987, with 44 km length. The second line (Munib / Shubra Al Khaimah) was operated in 1996, with 21.5-km-long. Finally the third Metro line (Cairo Airport / Imbaba / Cairo University), starting in 2012, is expected to be of 45.5 km total length. The cost of these three lines is estimated at about E£60 bn.

National Authority for Tunnels also aims at increasing the lengths of Great Cairo subway lines to 207 km by adding three other lines with a total estimated cost of E£84 bn. These lines will be the fourth line (west ring road behind the Dreamland - New Cairo) of about 42 km length, the fifth line (Nasr city - Sahel) of 24 km length, and the sixth line (new Maadi - Khosos) of 30 km length.

NIB greatly contributed to finance the implementation of the previous three metro lines. NIB will also fund the remaining and future lines in order to implement the project, expropriate land, provide drilling equipment, prepare research and studies, purchase the locomotives, and provide foreign exchange needed for the project. It will also contribute to the continuous needed substitution and renewal of equipment to maintain the quality of service.
